During Prinergy upgrade, a string variable is not long enough to handle a registry string

Error

Symptoms

During a Prinergy upgrade, the following error message appears: "The value in registry key <old reg key> is too long to be copied. After installation is completed, please create this key in <new reg key> and manually copy the value from the previous version."

For example:

"The value in registry key SOFTWARE\Creo\Araxi\1.0.12.BLD165\Default\JOBD\UserDefinedFolders is too long to be copied. After installation is completed, please create this key in SOFTWARE\Creo\Araxi\1.0.12.BLD166\Default\JOBD and manually copy the value from the previous version."

The installer then continues with the upgrade.

Cause

One of the steps done during a Prinergy upgrade is to copy the existing Prinergy registry structure (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CREO\Araxi\[version number.build number]) to a new structure under the new version and build number. The Prinergy installer can only handle registry strings up to 1023 characters in length, so if an existing installation contains a registry value is greater than 1023 characters, it will not be copied properly. Installshield has a limit of 1023 chars on its STRING data type.

Solution

1) Once the installer is finished, in regedit (you can't do it with regedt32) locate the new registry structure: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CREO\Araxi\[LATEST version number.LATEST build number].

2) Use Edit > Find to find the registry value "debug level". This is the registry value that failed to be copied.

3) Note which key this value is found in.

4) Go into the previous registry tree and find the same key.

5) Manually copy the value from the previous registry key to the same key in the new structure.

Permanent fix: Handling registry strings larger than 1023 characters would require a custom .dll. This will not be done for 1.1; a PR will be created for 2.0.

Permanent fix: Prinergy 2.0
