Symptoms |
Refiner complains about a missing image and draws a big X on the page, but there doesn't appear to be anything missing. |

Cause |
There really is an image referenced in the PDF document and the image data is not embedded. The problem is that the presence/absence of the image does not affect the appearance of the page. One reason might be that the image was dragged off the page in the DTP application. So the document still refers to the image, but the image will never appear on the page. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Detection of missing images in PDF documents is not 100% reliable because: - Distiller must have "Preserve OPI comments" enabled for Refiner to be able to detect conditions that indicate a missing image in PDF. - Distiller's "Preserve OPI comments" feature does not always properly preserve OPI comments because Adobe's DSC parser is very fragile and can be confused by slight deviations from DSC-compliance in the PostScript input file. - When an image is missing, there is often no way for us to be certain the embedded image (which we do not have) would affect the appearance of the page. Nothing appears to be missing, so the software appears to be complaining about a non-problem. |

Solution |
When generating the PDF, distill with "Preserve OPI comments" disabled. Prinergy job options for Distiller will do. Turn off "fail on missing images" in the Refine process plan when refining PDF input files. Permanent fix: |
