My film is coming out positive, but I asked for negative. And is it right- or wrong-reading?

Product

Operating system

Error

Symptoms

If Mirror print setting is opposite from what you set in the Output process plan in Prinergy, then the Mirror setting is incorrectly set to OFF in Print Console.

I have two pieces of film after peeling apart the Drytech film. Which one do I keep?

Cause

During a recent one-day regression test, there was some confusion about whether the film was imaging correctly with respect to emulsion up or down, and positive or negative.

After peeling Drytech film apart, it is also difficult to determine which piece is the donor (to be thrown away), or the receiver (to be kept).

Also, it is sometime difficult to determine which side of the receiver is the emulsion side. You need to know which side the emulsion is on to be able to determine if the film is right-reading or wrong-reading.

If Mirror Print is set to OFF in the Print Console (Print Settings for film), the film will image in the opposite setting of whatever is set in the Output Process Plan.

For example, if Print Console has Mirror Print set to OFF, and you request Mirrored output from Prinergy, you will get non-mirrored flim output.

Solution

Q: What Prinergy settings do I need to get right reading, positive image, emulsion down film?

A: In the Output process plan, set it for positive image, mirror on. You need Mirror set to ON because the Trendsetter images files with the text right reading, emulsion up.

Q: How do I check my film to see if it imaged correctly?

A: First, you must determine which of the two Drytech peeled layers is the one you want to keep. Drytech film consists of a donor layer, and a receiver layer. When you peel them apart after imaging, the thick layer is the donor, and the thin layer is the receiver. Keep the thin layer.

Second, you need to determine which side of the receiver has the emulsion. The non-shiny side is the emulsion side. You can confirm by trying to scratch that surface with a sharp object. If you're stratching the emulsion side, you will see the black emulsion flaking off.

Once you have the correct layer in hand (the receiver), you can see if the job imaged as a positive or negative image.

Then, to determine right or wrong reading, hold the film so that the emulsion side is facing away from you (called "emulsion down" in prepress jargon). If the text on the sheet is backwards, then the film is wrong reading. If it is not backwards, the film is right reading.

This terminology is sometimes confusing: a customer might say "This film is wrong-reading, emulsion up." Looking at the SAME film, another may say "This film is right-reading, emulsion down."

The Mirror setting determines whether a job is right- or wrong-reading. Since the Trendsetters image the media with its emulsion facing the laser, we say it images the job right-reading, emulsion up. So if you want the film imaged right-reading, emulsion down, you have to turn on Mirror in the Output process plan.
