Symptoms |
Starting the Mac client takes a long time. |
Cause |
A significant part of the problem is that the server does a "reverse name lookup" on the Mac client's IP address. This lookup searches a number of locations (HOSTS file, DNS, WINS) and this can take several seconds if the IP address does not exist in any of those locations. | |

Solution |
1. On the primary AND secondary servers, add an entry in the server's HOSTS file (located in \winnt\system32\drivers\etc) in the form: 192.197.216.123 MacName Note that if the Mac is using DHCP to get its IP address, the address may change in the future and the speed improvement will be lost. You need to repeat the workaround procedure for every client that might regularly connect to that server to get the same improvement. One way to do this en masse would be to add several generic lines, even if there is no client at that IP address, rather than spend the time figuring out what clients there actually are and dealing with changes or additions, e.g. just fill up the hosts file with lines like: 192.168.29.101 client101 192.168.29.102 client102 ... 192.168.29.254 client254 Permanent fix: This problem will be fixed if and when Iona patches Orbix so that it doesn't do the reverse lookup. Note that the names don't actually have to match the real computer name; you just need something there to work around the Orbix bug. This will then work for any client that gets a DHCP-assigned address within the range of dummy addresses added to the hosts file this way. Permanent fix: Prinergy 2.0 |
