Symptoms

Output to low-res PDF (Publish PDF or Vector JTP) results in a large PDF file.

Cause

There can be several causes for this problem:

1. Generate Alternate Images is not turned on in the Optimize stage of the Refine process plan

2. There is copydot page content

3. CT/LW page content

4. Simple page content

5. Page content includes Photoshop spot duotones

Solution

Check the following:

1. Is Generate Alternate Images turned on in the Optimize stage of the Refine process plan? These are the images that are used when you create a low-res PDF. If you select JPEG compression for Alternate Images, it should result in a low-res PDF, similar in size to what you would expect from Adobe Acrobat Distiller.

2. Is there copydot in the page content? The Copydot JTP can generate 300 dpi unscreened alternate images of a copydot page, but the low-res PDF will not be small.

3. Is the page content CT/LW-like? Even if Generate Alternate Images is turned on, Alternate Images can only be generated for CT-type data. The LW-type data will not have an Alternate Image, so the low-res PDF will still remain large.

4. Is the page content simple? For very simple pages (just text and vector artwork), often the low-res PDF page size will be the same size as the PDF digital master.

5. Does the page content include Photoshop spot duotones? Photoshop spot duotones saved as EPS are not represented correctly in the PostScript, and saving them in EPS format is not recommended in the Photoshop online help. Although they may output correctly to plate, Prinergy cannot generate Alternate Images of them. To fix this, resave the duotone as a DCS and use Prinergy's "recomposite when OPIing into composite thin PostScript" feature to get a better-built composite file that should result in a low-res Alternate Image.

.

If the above conditions are okay, two other possible workarounds are:

A. Turn on "Remove traps" in Prinergy 2.2. (For some page types, the traps can take up significant space in the PDF).

B. Take the Prinergy low rez PDF and use "Save As" from Adobe Acrobat 5 (which aggressively removes unused objects in the PDFs and can often make the file smaller yet).
