Symptoms |
Adobe Acrobat 5 reports "image parsing" and "out of memory" errors on raster (CT/LW or copydot) or other data-intensive PDF files |
Cause |
Adobe Acrobat 5 uses more memory than Acrobat 4 (this might be because of the new "Overprint Preview" functionality in Acrobat 5). On a dynamically-allocated memory operating system like Windows NT, Windows 2000, or OS X, this is not normally a problem. However, on an operating system such as Mac OS 9, you must tell the application when you launch it how much memory you would like to allocate to it. If this number is too small, the OS will not dynamically allocate more memory to the application, and Acrobat 5 will report an out-of-memory error. |

Solution |
If using Mac OS 9 or lower, use Acrobat 4. On a Mac with a lot of memory, allocate the minimum amount of memory to Acrobat 5 (Acrobat will use the "unused memory" on the Mac). If you are dealing with a copydot page, generate alternate images of the copydot using the "generate alternate images" checkbox of the Copydot section of the process plan, and have the View Accelerator turned on in Acrobat prior to opening the PDF. . Alternately, you can run Acrobat 5 under Mac OS X (native mode) or on a PC (Windows NT/2000). Permanent fix: |
