Prinergy Normalizer does not detect the "missing" fonts in a PDF

Product

  Prinergy 1.1; Prinergy Connect 2.0

Platform

Server: Data General or Dell all; Client: PC or Macintosh

Operating system

Server: Windows NT or 2000; Client: Windows or Macintosh

Error

Symptoms

***Applies to Prinergy Connect, Powerpack, Direct, Satellite, depending on installed configuration.***

Prinergy Normalizer does not detect the "missing" fonts in a PDF.

Cause

For all versions of Normalizer, PDFs are checked for fonts.

However, there may be cases where fonts are missing when the PDF file is first generate, for instance, in Distiller, but the program that is generating PDF is configured to allow missing fonts and substitutes missing fonts with a default font (usually Courier). When Prinergy processes the PDF input file, all fonts used on the page are present and embedded, so the file will be processed without error.

But Courier is being used where some other font was originally intended. From the user's point of view, Prinergy has not detected the "missing" fonts. From the Prinergy point of view, the PDF already contains the font it intends to use, that is, Courier.

Solution

Since the PDF no longer refers to the originally-intended font but rather, Courier, there is nothing Prinergy can do with the PDF file once created.

There are a couple of other solutions when creating the input file:

A. Creo supplies good prepress configuration files for Adobe Acrobat Distiller such as Distill For Prinergy.joboptions or Synapse Prepare that don't allow such PDF files to be generated in the first place.

B. Embed all fonts either when generating PS or when processing the file with Acrobat Distiller.
