PostScript fails Refining with error: "undefined; OffendingCommand: pdfmark; ErrorInfo: PUT nextImage" message

Operating system

Error

Symptoms

The problem occurs in QuarkXPress 4 PostScript output, with Photoshop 7 objects in the bleed area, that is run through Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 or Prinergy 2.1.

The Normalizer fails and reports: "undefined; OffendingCommand: pdfmark; ErrorInfo: PUT nextImage"

Cause

This is a known problem (a bug in Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5/Prinergy 2.1).

This issue seems tied to Photoshop 7 metadata when placed between pages in Quark 4, output as PS, and then processed by the Distiller 5 core.

Solution

There are 3 possible workarounds, and a patch. Some of these workarounds have been useful at sites that have reported the problem, while other sites have reported that only the patch helped.

1. Use the Custom Bleed XTension that comes with QuarkXPress 4.1, and use "page items" instead of synchronous or asynchronous bleed.

2. Use QuarkXPress 5 to generate PostScript. QuarkXPress 5 includes the Custom Bleed Xtension by default, so no problems will be experienced.

3. Use Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4 or 6 to process the PostScript to PDF.

4. This issue will be fixed when Prinergy incorporates the Distiller 6 core. For sites where the other workarounds or waiting for Distiller 6 integration are not acceptable, there is a patch available.

This issue seems tied to Photoshop 7 metadata when placed between pages in Quark 4, output as PS, and then processed by the Distiller 5 core. The fix disables the Photoshop 7 metadata (example, Title, Author, Caption, etc.) from making it into the PDF. We don't want to distribute this change in a general sense, because some sites might be depending on this metadata information to be in the PDF (for example, to determine the author information on a specific image).

Place the file in the "AraxiHome\AdobeExtreme\bin\CreoStartupNormOnly" folder. Restart Normalizers.

.

This issue will be fixed in Prinergy 2.3
