Symptoms |
Prinergy reports errors opening Archiver Media Manager. CreoERSMservice crashes shortly after starting and Archiver/Purge JTPs fail to start. 1) CreomERSMservice will start and then within a few seconds it will crash. The following is an example of the kind of errors you may see in the DIAG log files: E 17Mar00 02:46:25.859 [280.046] YCS143-68 ARAXI EmulatedRSMService.Device Thread: 46 iERSM_Helper.cpp(1303): No partition corresponds to physical medium ID = F$PP&r9D`CXi7FlC]FG8 2) Archive JTPs will hang on startup (they will show a status of "starting" in Prinergy Administrator). 3) Archiver Media Manager will not open (the CreoERSM is not running properly). |

Cause |
Possible causes: 1) Hardware failure, most of the cases were the changer hang up, SCSI time-out on the device in event viewer. 2) Moving a bar code media label from one tape to another after the label had already been registered in the Archiver Media Manager. 3) SCSI settings in the registry pointing to the wrong bus 4) Inconsistent RSM registry settings after installation 5) Tape device has been incorrectly configurated. |

Solution |
If the possible causes of the problem is 1, the FS22 "hung" state - i.e. front panel buttons not responding - to restart the ERSM service and Archive JTP without shutting down the entire Prinergy system: Try the following steps to recover from the hang before restarting the system. 1) Yank power cord from tape library. 2) Plug power cord back in and wait for the library to get to the Ready state. 3) Ensure Archive JTP is stopped - that is, the state displayed in UADM should be stopped. If it isn't, and trying to stop it using UADM fails, kill the PArchRetJTP process using the Task Manager. 4) From Control Panel/Tape Devices select the "Detect" button - wait till it finishes scanning for the tape devices. 5) Now restart the ERSM service - it should startup. 6) Now restart the Archive JTP - it should startup. If it still fails, then the only solution to bring the tape library and archiver back online will be to restart the entire server. However, if you restart the system without resetting the tape library first, then when NT starts up, it won't see the changer when it is hung. If the possible cause is 2, delete the tape that is causing the problem and use a different barcode. If the possible cause is 3, compare the value in hkey_local_machine\Hardware\devicemap\scsi for the changer and drive, update the scsi settings in Hkey_local_machine\software\Creo\Arch PVR 0\Physical Library A, for the changer and device attributes. If the possible cause is either 4 or 5, then use the following steps to delete the registry settings and re-install Archiver. Workaround for a new install of the Archiver: 1) Write down the current configuration information for the media pools; write down the exact spelling and syntax used in the pool names, as you will re-create these later. You can find the media pool names from the registry under: HKLM\software\creo\ARAXI\RSM\MediaPools\Poolidnumber\Name. Save this information exactly as it is listed here. 2) Stop the Archive and Purge JTPs from the Prinergy Administrator. 3) Make sure the CreoERSMservice is stopped (control panel >> services). 4) Open Regedt32.exe. 5) Save the following registry keys to a file for backup purposes (Registry menu >> Save Key): HKLM\software\creo\ARAXI\RSM HKLM\software\creo\Platemaster1.2 HKLM\software\creo\Arch PVR 0 6) Delete the above registry keys (this will delete all the sub-keys). 7) Re-run the Archiver Configuration Wizard. 8) After the CreoERSMservice starts, open the Archiver Media Manager and re-create all the pools you wrote down in step 1. 9) Open Prinergy Administrator and re-start the Archive and Purge JTPs.
10) Insert each tape inside the drive to register, it may take a while. Use Media Manager, work queue to check for status, be patient! 11) After all tapes have been registered in the system, they will all be recognized under import pool. 12) Drag the tape from import pool to the appropriate application pool. 13) Stop the Archiver JTP and the CreoERSM service, and open Regedt32.exe. 14) Add the blocksize value 16Kb in the registry for each tape. Run "regedt32", go to \\hkey_local_machine\software\creo\araxi\rsm\logicalMedia, under each media, on the right side, there should be a value AraxiBlockSize and it is in hex, so the value is 3136333834. If there is no AraxiBlockSize, add the value in the registry. Add a value as "AraxiBlockSize", data type "REG_BINARY", type in the value 3136333834. Remember, do this for each tape. Permanent fix: Prinergy 2.0 |
