Solution

When you create two layers in Preps and then want to assign different pages to these layers, you must know the following about the pages used for this assignment.

Suppose you have a separate or composite bottom layer containing CMYK (pictures, etc.) and you are trying to put a white box into the top layer and to knockout all bottom layers:

The top layer is assigned by a:

- Separated page with "include blank pages" unchecked: Will knockout the color for which the page has any content. When the page contains black text in a white box, the black separation on the bottom will be knocked out by the white box.

- Separated page with "include blank pages" checked: Will knockout pages colors. When there is black text in a white box, the black separation of the bottom page will be knocked out.

- Composite page with "include blank pages" unchecked: Will knockout the separations for which this page has content. Black text in the white box will knockout the black of the bottom page.

- Composite page with "include blank pages" checked: Will knockout all bottom layers.

- Spotcolor in separate or composite input file with "include blank pages" unchecked: Will mix the color with all the bottom colors - spotcolor will be overprinted.

- Spotcolor mapped to process colors with "include blank pages" unchecked: Will only knockout colors in the bottom layer that the spotcolor will be mapped to (for example. spotcolor mapped to black will knockout black; spotcolor mapped to the separation definitions such as 50C 50M 10K will knockout in CMK).

- Spotcolor included in a composite page with "include blank pages" checked: Will knockout all the colors in the bottom layers.

When you want to have a box knocking out in all the bottom layers, place this box in the bottom pages, or create a composite PS for the top layer and check "include blank pages". This page must then contain the wanted white box.

When you want to overprint the top layer, do not use any white boxes, or create the overprinting things in spotcolor.

Attention: When mapping this color to CMYK, this will knockout only in that color it was mapped to --> create a white box if there was one, in these colors. Don't worry about "include" or "do not include" blank pages.

NOTE: The best thing to tell the customer is that if they want any white boxes, to place them in the bottom layer or to create composite PS with "include blank pages" and then to place white boxes in there. If they do not want any white boxes, they should not use any of them...
