Symptoms |
1. When you start Prinergy, it takes an abnormally long time to start. In the Administrator window, it spends many minutes showing "Deleting old temporary files..." without progress, then finally continues on with normal startup. 2. When Prinergy is started at the command line by typing Araxi.exe, you see that it hangs for many minutes in a script called arxreap before continuing on. 3. In Performance Monitor, clicking to add a counter also hangs for many minutes before continuing. 4. Errors in NT event log about AppleTalk or other network services/drivers not loading correctly. To reproduce the problem: 1. Set up the computer to use a standard 100BaseT Ethernet adapter. Install standard protocols / network services, e.g. TCP/IP, Services for Macintosh, etc. 2. Add a gigabit adapter, and reconfigure network bindings appropriately. 3. Prinergy doesn't support multiple network cards, so try to disable 100BaseT card that is no longer needed: W2K is "smart" and seems to automatically load the 100BT driver even if you don't want it, so to prevent this, go into BIOS setup and disable support for on-board NIC, or physically remove PCI card. 4. When W2K boots up, only the gigabit adapter is seen. However, the registry still contains "phantom" config info for the old 100BT card that was concealed from W2K. |

Solution |
Fix the problems reported in the event log about AppleTalk by properly configuring it for the only adapter in use. To do so: 1. Go to Network and Dialup Connections, then to Local Area Connection, then to Properties, and check+select AppleTalk protocol, then Properties, and ensure Accept inbound connections is checked. It would be unchecked if AppleTalk had been bound to the other adapter, but the driver for the other adapter is no longer being loaded. AppleTalk can only use one LAN adapter at a time. 2.Save changes. 3. Check that Performance Monitor no longer hangs when attempting to add counters. 4. Check that the script arxreap.cmd doesn't hang by running with the -t option (test, don't execute). If this executes without hanging, then Prinergy startup should be normal again. Permanent fix: |
