In Quark PS files, objects bleeding off the spine edge appear on abutting pages

Error

Symptoms

In QuarkXPress PostScript files, objects bleeding off the spine edge partially appear on abutting pages.

Cause

Regardless of the unit of measure used in QuarkXPress, only whole Adobe points are used when writing the PostScript file. Some page sizes in QuarkXPress will equal an even number of points. For example, letter size (8.5"x11") equals exactly 612 x 792 points. Other page sizes do not convert to an even number of points, such as A4 (8.268" x 11.693" or 210 mm x 297 mm), which equals 595.296 x 841.896 points. When writing to PostScript, QuarkXPress will round the position of their page crop marks for an A4 page to 595 x 842 points. If facing pages are used, the right-hand facing page will begin where the left-hand page ends (.296 points short), causing portions of items from the left-hand page to appear along the left edge of the right-hand page. Under these conditions, images will appear as thin lines on some of the press sheet pages in Preps.

Solution

There are several possible solutions:

1. Resize the original QuarkXPress pages to a custom page size equal to whole Adobe points, then reposition items on those pages accordingly.

2. Rearrange the QuarkXPress job in such a way that facing pages are not used.

3. In Preps, set page offsets to compensate for the rounding of the page sizes. In the above example, that would be a negative offset of .296 points for all odd pages other than page 1.

4. Correct the geometry in Prinergy using the Acrobat Geometry Editor plug-in.
