Error |
The dependancy service or group failed to start. |
Symptoms |
After you install Services For Unix on an EPM+ server, VERITAS Storage Replicator (VSR) does not start and reports the error: The dependancy service or group failed to start (NobleNEt Portmapper or portmap). |
Cause |
When Services For Unix (SFU) is installed first, VSR will successfully use the portmapper provided by Microsoft and will work OK. However, VSR is installed first, Microsoft's portmapper tries to assert itself. This causes a conflict and the VSR services to fail to start. One system cannot have 2 portmappers running. | |

Solution |
Background from support.veritas.com: Installing SFU on a system with VSR already installed causes some concerns when coexisting with VERITAS Storage Replicator (VSR). The main issue is that both applications use a portmapper and one system cannot run multiple portmappers simultaneously. During installation, VSR installs the Noblenet Portmapper for TCP service, the ENL service (a VERITAS component), and the RxRSA service. The ENL and RSA services have a service dependency on Noblenet in order to avoid starting the RSA before the portmapper. Procedure: The following procedure will allow VSR to run on Microsoft's portmapper: 1. Validate that Services for Unix is on the system, by locating the service called "portmap". It is implemented as a hidden driver, found at Computer Management > Device Manager > View > View Hidden Devices. 2. From Programs > Administrative Tools > Services, select the Noblenet Portmapper for TCP Service, right-click and choose "Stop". 3. Change the Noblenet Portmapper for TCP Startup Type to "Manual" from the default setting of "Automatic". 4. Using regedt32 (not regedit), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ENL and delete the DependOnService value. The ENL does not need a portmapper. 5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RxRsa and edit its DependOnService value. Change "NoblenetPortmapper ENL" to "portmap". Ensure that the order remains the same and do not add or remove any lines. 6. Copy "winrpc32.dll" from the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\VERITAS Shared\Vsr" folder to the "C:\Program Files\VERITAS Storage Replicator" folder. This file must reside in both locations. 7. Reboot the machine. Permanent fix: |
