(2.0) Archiver fails "no writable medium..." or on 2.0.7 fails with "Capacity is zero..." even there is a blank new tape

Product

Platform

Intel

Operating system

Windows 2000 Server

Error

For Prinergy version below 2.0.7 :

"The media pool \Online either contains no writeable media, or no writeable media with sufficient free space or available media are Off-line.[1054524]"

For Prinergy version 2.0.7 or higher:

Archive: The process can not allocate a new medium. The media pool name is \VonHoffmanOwensville.

Or if you have the Quantum driver, but the tape was registered using Microsoft drive, the error message will be :

Error adding new medium: code = 1054029; developer-speak message = 'Capacity is zero, partition name = '; source file = NTMS_RemovableMedium.cpp; line number = 2801; localized message = '( code = 1054029 )'

Symptoms

You are adding some tapes to the pools. When trying to archive, you get the error message saying that the medial pool either contains no writeable media, or no writeable media with sufficient free space, which is strange since you have a brand new tape. The status of the tape is Idle, New.

Cause

The Microsoft tape driver is reading the blank new tape capacity as 0 or somehow the tape is not registering properly by the Archiver JTP.

Solution

1. Make sure the tape driver for the drive is using a Quantum tape driver, not Microsoft.

2. Go to Computer Management, click on Device Manager > Tape drivers, highlight the drive, right click and select Properties, then select the driver tab, and make sure it is the Quantuam tape driver.

2. Once you update the Quantum tape driver, delete the tape and re-introduce it back to the system.

NOTE: The tape must be deleted i.e. simply dragging it to the free pool after changing the driver may not work.

Permanent fix:
