Symptoms |
Archiver seems to be mounting and dismounting the same tape a lot when doing a singular archive. Under certain circumstance, the Archiver may split an archive task into more than one save-set (physical archive). If each save-set is on a different tape, then the behaviour is more understandable. If more than one save-set from the same task is on the same tape, then it seems like odd behaviour. |

Cause |
You can end up with more than one save-set on the same tape if: - the files are from more than one disk volume or share, or - the total archive size is beyond some limit (default is 2 GB). There is a registry setting MaxGigbytesPerArchive (HKLM\Software\Creo\Araxi\bld_no.\Default\Archiver) that controls the limit and what the effects might be of changing it i.e.: - If the value is very large, then each save-set will be unbounded in size. - The larger a save-set is, the longer it will take to write to tape. Until a save-set has been completely written to tape, we will not commit any record of it to the database. If the task is interrupted after running for a long time (this can take 10+ minutes for 2 GB, even more for slow DLT 4000 drives), then any incompletely written save-sets are "wasted". So restarting an "incremental" archive (which is seldom done) would be efficient (i.e. only the unarchived files are re-written), but may not gain you anything if there was only one save-set. |
