Symptoms

A job has a large number of colors on it or the spot color names are very long. When you attempt to create an output, it fails with the following error:

- "Message from Extreme: message from RIP: ColorantOrder size of 746 exceeds maximum size of 500"

- "Message from Extreme: message from RIP: %%[Error:interrupt; OffendingCommand: interrupt]%%

- "Message from Extreme: message from RIP: %%[Flushing rest of job to end-of-file) will be ignored]%%

- "Message from Extreme: error while RIPing: page 1

Cause

You've run into the "too many characters in the ColorantOrder parameter" limitation in Prinergy. Basically, the number of characters when you write down all of the colorant names one after another separated by spaces must be less than 500. This is a hard-coded limit because of the way the current Extreme architecture is set up. It has to do with the size of the string used to transfer the ColorantOrder parameter in the job ticket. PMS color names are typically about 14-16 characters long, so you can do the arithmetic to figure out the maximum number of spot colors allowed.

Solution

Somehow reduce the number of characters used to represent the color names i.e. reduce the number of colors (using Color Mapping) or alias the colors to shorter names.
