Symptoms |
Under rare circumstances, after launching Prinergy online help, suddenly you will notice continuous intense disk activity, and in the NT Task Manager process list, you will see hh.exe continuously consuming roughly 10% of available CPU, which is highly unusual. If you run Systems Internals' DiskMon utility, you will see an endless pattern of hh.exe reading and writing from a tempory file, and also hh.dat in the Windows system directory. |

Cause |
On Windows platforms (i.e. NT), Prinergy uses the Microsoft HTML Help format for online help, which bundles all HTML pages into a single compressed file and uses a special viewer included with Internet Explorer 4 and up, hh.exe. Reference: Microsoft Knowledge Base Q235062: hh.dat is a database file that saves such information as the window position and bookmarks for the HTML Help viewer. |

Solution |
Identify the runaway hh.exe process instance in the NT Task Manager process list. Terminate the process by right-clicking on the process name and choosing End Process in the pop-up menu. The disk and CPU activity should immediately go back down to normal usage patterns. If there is more than one instance of hh.exe, meaning different help files are open, choose the one that has the high CPU usage. The others should be relatively quiescent. Restarting new copies of hh.exe doesn't cause the problem to re-occur immediately. Permanent fix: |
