Preps marks shows through PDF content even when mark is placed on bottom

Error

Marks content shows through page content on output.

Symptoms

A Preps mark is placed on a template in an area where PDF content will be placed. The mark is NOT set to "Bring to Front" in Preps. If the PDF page content placed over the mark contains Cyan and Magenta , then the Cyan and Magenta of the mark will not print, but the Yellow and Black of the mark will print. If the PDF page content placed over the mark contains Yellow and Black, then the Yellow and Black of the mark will not be visible through the content, but the Cyan and Magenta will be visible. If the PDF content placed over the mark contains CMYK, then the CMYK of the mark will not be visible through the content.

Cause

The assumption is, by not setting the Preps mark as "Bring to Front", that the mark will not show through the PDF page content. In other words, it is expected that the PDF content will "knockout" the underlying mark. This is NOT true. According to the PostScript rules of the Overprint model, the zero channels in the PDF page are left alone and will image. For example, if a PDF content page contains only Yellow, and this content is over a CMYK mark, then following the PostScript Overprinting rules, the Yellow of the mark is "knockedout" and the Zero channels of Cyan, Magenta and Black are imaged and visible through the yellow content. This is the expected behaviour for an "overprint" model.

Solution

There are two ways to avoid the problem of a mark that is underneath a "live" area showing through the PDF content.

1. Remove the mark from the template or move it outside a 'live' area.

2. After import and refinings, open the PDF marks file in Acrobat and use PitStop to either delete the mark or set the fill value to zero. Either of these PitStop actions removes the mark from the PDF.
