Bottled pages are not correctly clipped

Error

Symptoms

Customer jobs have bottled pages (up to 5 or 6 degrees per page). The bottling is done using imposition job tickets created by Preps. When doing output with Prinergy 1.1, they notice that the clipping around their pages is not quite right.

Bottled, imposed output do not have pages clipped correctly. The page clipping will not rotate with the bottled pages. Instead the page clipbox remains oriented with the edges of the media. This can cause the corners of some bottled pages to be clipped by the neighboring page's clipbox. Also, page content or marks normally clipped by a rotated clipbox may not be visible.

Cause

The job ticket specifies a clipbox on each page, but the clipbox is fixed to the media and does not rotate with the page CTM. This is a known limitation of the job ticket specification (and has been, since the first version). If the job ticket used the source clip (instead of clipbox) method to specify clipping, then it would work consistently. This means that the bottled pages are being clipped to a non-rotated clipbox, which is causing the behavior that the customer is seeing. Unfortunately, Prinergy 1.1 does not support the SourceClipPath job ticket parameter but Prinergy 2.0 does.

Out-of-the-box Preps 4.0 cannot write a SourceClipPath instead of a clipbox. This capability would need to be in a future release of Preps.

Solution

Preps 4.1.2 (build 188) fixes this problem. Source Clip is now implemented on bottled pages while non-bottled pages use Clip Path.

Preps 4.2 improves the clipping of bottled pages in the job ticket to the same behaviour as PostScript. Page and bleed clipping rotates with the bottled pages and is clipped at the center of the gutter.
