Symptoms

The customer has erased or overwritten a tape and wants to send the tape to a data recovery center.

Cause

Solution

There is a company called Associated Technologies and Data Recovery in Minneapolis that does AIT data recovery:

- Contact is Terry and his number is 612-209-3568.

On a standard turnaround, they charge anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 USD per tape. On a faster turnaround, they charge more. They have had experience recovering data from AIT-2 tapes.

Also, Ovation data recovery in Texas. Contact Greg Servos 713-464-1300.

Ovation offers a free estimate of what data can be recovered and the cost to do so. Associated makes a nominal charge for this service.

Our experience internally has been that it is very difficult and time-consuming for the labs to recover data from a damaged AIT tape.

We strongly recommend that customers archive copies of their data to more than one tape so that they have protection against medium loss or damage as well as human error.
