Symptoms |
A tape placed into slot 7 is not accessible. An inventory of the FastStor does not show the tape in the media list. However, when a tape is placed in or removed from this slot, that action is correctly indicated by the display on the front panel of the FastStor. From RSM, right click on the FastStor Library. Select Properties. On the media page of the properties dialog, there are two fields for "Number of slots" and "First slot number". For a FS 7 with barcode reader installed, the correct values for these parameters are 6 and 2 respectively. If the values are shown a 6 and 1, you are experiencing this problem. |

Cause |
The RSM in Windows 2000 does not support changing numbers of slots or drives within a library. To guarantee that the slot values used by RSM are correct, it is necessary to force RSM to re-detect the device after installing or removing a barcode reader. The ADIC FastStor 7 library has 7 slots. An optional barcode reader can be installed in slot 1 with the result that 6 slots are available for use. These slots are numbered 2 through 7. |

Solution |
Note: This solution may require a reboot of the system. 1) From Device Manager, disable the ADIC FastStor medium changer device. 2) From RSM, you will now be able to delete the FastStor, which will be shown with a red "X". 3) Re-enable the medium changer device. 4) Stop and restart Removable Storage Management Service from Computer Management. This will re-install the Faststor, ensuring that the correct supported version from ADIC is used. The device driver will automatically load the Microsoft driver, which is detected to be correct for this device. If this happens, you will need to use the update driver function to bring the driver up to the current revision. You do not need to reboot between installing the MS driver and updating it. However, a reboot may required after you finish installing the correct driver. 5) When RSM restarts after the reboot, it will detect the "new" FastStor device with the correct parameters. You can confirm this by ensuring that the correct values are shown on the media page of the properties dialogue. Permanent fix: |
