Fonts lose tracking after refining in Prinergy or Prinergy Evo

Product

  • Kodak® Prinergy® Connect™ 3.1
  • Kodak Prinergy Evo™

Platform

Apple® Macintosh®, PC

Operating system

All operating systems

Symptoms

To reproduce the problem in Prinergy:

  • Refine the file (flatten in the normalizer). When you view the file in Acrobat + VPS, font kearning and tracking appears to be compressed on some fonts.

To reproduce the problem outside of Prinergy:

  • Import the problem PDF into IDCS2, and then output PostScript and distill it in Acrobat 7. You should still see the problem.

Cause

This appears to be a problem with the flattener feature in Adobe® Distiller® software, version 7.

If you preserve transparency, the problem does not occur. If you save PostScript out of Distiller software version 6, the problem does not occur. The problem only occurs when you save PostScript out of Acrobat Distiller software version 7.

Tests with the Acrobat Distiller 8 flattener have not produced this problem.

Solution

Until Adobe fixes the flattener feature, use the following workarounds:

Prinergy 3.x

  1. Open the file in Adobe® Acrobat® version 6, output PostScript, and refine as usual.
  2. Refine the original file with the Preserve Transparency setting turned ON and allow the CPSI RIP to flatten the image.

  3. Note: The Preserve Transparency feature is a beta feature in Prinergy 3.1.

Prinergy 4.x

  1. Refine the original file with the Leave as is setting turned ON.
  2. Output to the Adobe PDF Print Engine.
