Symptoms |
Archiving a job that is more than 10 GB fails with the error: "no writable available medium....." |
Cause |
When trying to archive a job that is more than 10 GB, the Archiver task will fail even if there is a tape in the library. Archiver limitation - freespace is set to 10 GB by default. ERSM is hardcoded to set freespace to 10 GB, no matter what kind of drive you have. Once you archive a file on the tape, the drive firmware will update the accurate freespace according to the drive capacity. DLT4000 Drive - 20 GB DLT7000 Drive - 35 GB |

Solution |
For tape library users, register more free tapes to fit the total archive size of the job. For example, if you have a 30 GB job to archive with a DLT7000 drive, you need to register three new tapes. The Archiver will pick one of the tapes to archive, the accurate free space will get to the database, and the job will archive on that tape. Another example, if you have a 30 GB job to archive with a DLT4000 drive, you need to register three new tapes. The Archiver will split the job into two tapes. For single DLT drive users, there is another problem: the Archiver won't recognize allocated new media if the tape is offline, so the workaround for single DLT drive users archiving a job that is more than 10 GB is to do a selective archive; they need to split the job manually to perform the archive. Permenant Fix: In Windows 2000 with Prinergy 2.0. Permanent fix: Prinergy 2.0 |
