Failover on a backup tertiary with NIC Teaming encounters IP conflict

Product

  Prinergy 2.3.1.3, 3.0.2.x, 3.1.0.x, 4.x

Platform

Operating system

W2K, W2K3

Error

Pop-up warning dialog box about IP conflict after failing over to the backup tertiary server.

Symptoms

- When job replication is in failover mode, a pop-up dialog box comes up every minute warning about IP conflict. Both MAC addresses in the warning message belongs to the backup tertiary server.

- The tertiary server is configured for NIC Teaming.

Cause

DoubleTake failover applies the main tertiary server IP address to the MAC address of the NIC. Since SLB use all MAC addresses of member NICs, the IP address is applied to both NICs. This results in the IP conflict.

Solution

LACP (802.3ad) should be used instead of SLB. LACP use one MAC address for the network link. If the problem still persists, one of the NICs can be disabled on the backup tertiary server before failing over.
