Error

Symptoms

A job submitted for archiving stops with the message "Queued at Service Archive".

In the process detail, the indicator does not move at all. From the second user's point of view, it appears that the system is hung. When the user reboots, all tasks, including the one that is waiting for the prompt, are terminated.

Cause

Archiver media manager/RSM is waiting for operator input to insert the tape. It will block all other archive/retrieve tasks for any archiving device that has only one drive, such as Single DLT drive, Faststor 7, or Faststor 22. An ATL tape library with more than one drive will work fine with the rest of the archiver tasks.

If the customer ignores the prompt to insert an off-line tape, all the archiver tasks for any device that only has one drive will be blocked. The job won't abort; it will sit idle and wait for operator inputs. It does not actually stop the ERSM, although it may appear to have stopped because when one user ignores the prompt, another user won't be aware of the error.

In one case, a previously-submitted retrieve was pending, waiting for someone to put a tape in the drive. However, the message requesting the tape insertion only appeared on the workstation of the person who submitted the second job for archiving, and this person had left their workstation.

Solution

1. Check the media manager work queue to decide between inserting the medium or aborting the task.

Users should always use Queue Manager to check their task's progress. They can view QueueManager to find out why a task is taking longer than expected. It may be the case that there a several archive/retrieve tasks are scheduled ahead of theirs.

2. Insert the prompt medium into the library or drive to continue the task or abort the task that is asking for operator input.
