Symptoms |
When an EPS containing spot colors is placed in QuarkXPress and poured thin and separated, content for spot colors that the OPI engine is told to "preserve as spot" are lost. |
Cause |
If a spot color used in the EPS graphic is a Pantone and has been specified using the single letter qualifier in the EPS graphic, then Quark's color name will not match the color name in the graphic. OPI will not merge in the graphic for the Pantone separation because it appears that the graphic does not paint anything on the Pantone plate. . Pantone spot colors used when creating an EPS graphic may have a single character library qualifier (C="Coated", U="Uncoated", etc.) specified in at the end of the color name (Eg. "PANTONE 120 CVC" instead of "PANTONE 120 CV"). According to Pantone, when such an EPS graphic is placed in Quark, Quark truncates the name of Pantone colors (by one character) when it adds the color name to its color list for the document so that spot colors match the unqualified Pantone color name regardless of whether they came from the Coated, Uncoated, or Process swatch libraries. . When a graphic (EPS) containing Pantone spot colors is placed in Quark, the color name that Quark adds to its color list will not necessarily match the name of the colorant painted by the graphic. As a result, when separated PostScript is poured from Quark, the color name specified in the %%PlateColor comment will not match the colorant painted by the EPS graphic. When the graphic is omitted and later merged with OPI, nothing from the EPS will be painted on the Pantone separation. |
