Cause

Solution

A quick way to check if your machine has the wrong binding order is to use the getmac reskit utility.

Here's a sample output from a properly configured machine:

You'll notice that the NetBT_Tcpip{GUID} is on top. This should be the network card. The GUID should correspond to the NIC's GUID.

You can find the NIC's GUID in the following registry key:

HKLM\software\microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkCards\1\ServiceName

NetbiosSmb should be at the bottom of the list.

If you find that this is not correct you must modify the following registry values:

Under HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\service\lanmanserver\linkage modfy bind, export and route values so NetBT_Tcpip{NIC's GUID} is on top and NetbiosSmb is on the bottom. All three of these values should match.

Once you've made these changes you must reboot for these settings to take effect.
