Symptoms |
Archiver fails to create an archive. The user interface indicates that the task has failed, but doesn't indicate that it actually ended. As well, when you try to stop the task, it won't end. The request is sent, but the archive is never completed. If you only have one drive, the service thread doesn't pick up the remaining archives in the queue so the archiver appears to be hung. Nothing is being archived or retrieved. The only way to get the Archiver working again is to restart the JTP. |

Cause |
What is happening is that the unhandled exception causes the medium thread to never send a 'finished' message back to the service thread. The service thread is then stuck in limbo and never terminates. This effectively hangs the Archiver JTP - the currently active job indicates that it failed, however, it is never actually completed. Any more archive jobs submitted after this happens are just queued. Stopping the Archive JTP using UADM fails because the service thread is still active. The Archive JTP needs to be terminated manually via Task Manager, before it can be restarted. | |
