Symptoms |
The customer would like to use the Mac to connect to the Internet as well run Prinergy Workshop. However, Workshop takes a long time to open. |
Cause |
There is a DNS entry in the 'Name Server' field for the TCP/IP settings in the Mac's Control Panels. The DNS server is needed to connect to the Internet, but this affects Prinergy Workshop because Workshop is trying to access the DNS server to do a reverse-name lookup. If the DNS entry is removed, Workshop starts up quickly because it cannot do the name lookup. |

Solution |
The Mac can be configured to use different TCP/IP settings for Internet use and non-Internet use by creating two TCP/IP profiles. The customer can switch from one profile to the other as required. To create a non-Internet profile, do the following: (assuming that the current profile allows Internet connections) 1) On the Mac, click the Apple Menu icon | Control Panels and select TCP/IP. 2) Click File | Configurations... 3) Highlight the current configuration and click the 'Duplicate' button. 4) Name the profile 'Prinergy'. 5) If the Name Server field is not editable, click Edit | User Mode... and click the 'Advanced' radio button. 6) Remove all entries in the 'Name Server addr' list box. 7) Close the 'Prinergy' profile dialog box and click Save to save the profile. When the user wishes to switch between the Internet and non-Internet profiles: 1) Open the TCP/IP control panel applet and click File | Configurations. 2) Select the original configuration (usually called Default) and click the Make Active button to use the Internet profile or select the Prinergy profile for non-Internet use.
