System backup hangs, NTBackup is still running

Product

  Prinergy Connect 2.0

Platform

Operating system

Error

Symptoms

The system backup fails to complete.

- Task Manager shows NTBackup is still running several hours after the backups were started.

- A tape in the Backup\Prinergy pool is loaded in the drive but NTBackup will not write to it.

- The RSM work queue shows a mount request with a status of 'Waiting'.

- The RSM shows the tape in the drive with the status 'Loaded, Allocated' or the state 'Loaded'.

- If you attempt to de-allocate the tape in the drive and prepare it, the message 'The media pool identifier does not represent a valid media pool' appears in the Management Console window.

Cause

The tape may have been either manually mounted in the RSM by the user or a previous hung instance of NTBackup. If the user mounts the tape in the RSM by right-clicking the tape and selecting 'Mount', this will not make the tape available to NTBackup. If a previous instance of NTBackup mounted the tape, and that instance was killed, the tape will again not be available to a NTBackup. In both cases, the status of the tape will show 'Loaded,Allocated', and the Work Queue will show that a mount request is queued with a status of 'Waiting'.

If you manually dismount the tape, the status of the tape will change to 'Idle, Allocated' and the queued Mount request will be executed. The status of the tape will then show up as 'Loaded, Allocated' again, but this time it will be mounted for use by NTBackup.

Note: If the tape is not used by any application, its state should show 'Dismountable', not 'Loaded'.

Solution

Dismount the tape using the RSM snap-in:

1. Select Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management.

2. In Computer Management, expand Removable Storage -> Media Pools -> Backup.

3. In the Backup\Prinergy pool, right-click the mounted tape (with the status 'Loaded, Allocated') and select 'Dismount'.

4. Allow the tape to be re-mounted by NTBackup and let the backups continue.
