srvany.exe crashes, backup fails to start

Product

  Prinergy Connect 2.0

Platform

Operating system

Windows 2000

Error

srvany.exe - Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0x000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Symptoms

After upgrading to Prinergy 2.0.7.0, AraxiBackupManager or AraxiSysStateBackup services sometimes fail to start and there is an error message that srvany.exe failed to initialize properly. This may affect the primary or the secondary server.

Cause

Prinergy 2.0.7 changes a Windows registry setting, which appears to affect srvany.exe. The AraxiBackupManager and AraxiSysStateBackup services are dependent on srvany.exe.

Solution

Revert to the original Windows registry setting. Note that the change was introduced because it helped the Prinergy system stay up longer. Therefore, this workaround should only be applied to individual machines exhibiting this problem.

1) Navigate to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems

2) Edit the Windows (REG_EXPAND_SZ) string value. You will see a string containing a list of name=value parameter pairs separated by whitespace.

For example:

%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

3) Change only the SharedSection parameter. (Don't touch anything else!) SharedSection specifies the system and desktop heaps using the following format:

SharedSection=wwww,xxxx,yyyy,zzzz

For example, SharedSection=1024,3072,512,512

On a Prinergy 2.0.7.x system in the lab, this looks like: SharedSection=1024,3072,2048[,zzzz]

4) Change it to SharedSection=1024,3072,1024[,zzzz]

5) If there's a fourth value (zzzz) in the comma-separated list, leave it as is; if there are only three, change only the third from 2048 to 1024.
