Error

RMAN-06003: ORACLE error from target database: ORA-01220: file based sort illegal before database is open

Symptoms

OracleBackupManager fails to restore the database. The \Ora816\Creo\Logs\OracleBackupLogFile.log shows the error message "file based sort illegal before database is open".

Cause

RMAN is attempting to perform a sort and it does not have enough memory to perform the sort. It cannot perform the sort on disk because the database is not opened and the data files are not accessible.

Solution

Add the parameter "sort_area_size = 1000000" to the \Ora816\Database\initCreo.ora file and retry the restore.

Remove the parameter after the database has been restored.

If you still get the same error, try using a larger value. The example above sets the sort_area_size to 1MB, try using a larger value such as 10MB.
