Error

Symptoms

The Windows 2000 system was booted from the Last Known Good or the system is behaving unusually and you suspect the registry may be corrupt.

Cause

Solution

Use the Python script RegScan.cmd to scan the registry for corruption. (The link to the RegScan script is in the See Also section of this page.)

To run the script:

1) Open a Command Prompt window on the server.

2) Enter: REGSCAN <registry path>

- Where: <registry path> is the fully qualified registry path.

- The registry path must start with one of: HKLM, HKCU, HKU, HKCR

- If you wish to display the help screen enter REGSCAN -?

3) The utility will recursively read each registry key starting at the specified path and will display any errors found. At the end of the scan, the total number of errors will be displayed. If you are scanning HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet on a good system, it will show only 7 "Access denied" errors. This is normal.

Example:

- D:\> REGSCAN HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet

- Error: pywintypes.api_error (5, 'RegOpenKeyEx', 'Access is denied.')

- Failed to open subkey: System\Currentcontrolset\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\Properties

- ....

- There were 7 error(s).

4) If errors exist, restore the system state from a known good backup.
