Symptoms

I want to insert uncalibrated marks into the color bar.

Cause

Solution

1. Create an EPS or PostScript of the desired mark.

2. Refine the mark through Prinergy without color management.

3. Output the mark as DCS Raster or EPS Raster. (Use DCS Raster for marks that contain spot colors. Use EPS Raster for marks that are process only.)

- Resolution should be set the same as your final output device.

- Device should be set as CMYK; shades should be set to 1.

- Layout size should be set as digital.

- Screen settings should be the same as your final output.

4. Import the resulting DCS/EPS LINK file into Preps as a mark and place in a Preps template. The mark can be imported into Preps or Pandora, but note that the mark for Pandora must be PDF.

5. Proceed with your normal Prinergy imposition workflow (for example, assign pages and output).

.

The resulting DCS or EPS file is screened. Mark and harmony calibration curves will not be applied to it when you output the imposed job from Prinergy.

.

Note that some imposition packages, including Preps, require that any marks that are placed must be composite (no DCS, for example). Therefore, if you need to place a mark with spots into Preps, you will need to output DCS or separated 1-bit TIFF (so the spots are preserved on the creation of the copydot-like data), and then process the mark to make it composite. Copydot Toolkit can create an EPS from DCS and separated TIFFs. Alternately, some users have reported using QuarkXPress to create an EPS (by placing multiple colorized 1-bit TIFFs over top of each other and setting them to overprint).

.

Alternately, you can use OPI to recompose the DCS into composite.

1. Using OPI Sampler solution (Sampler4.0, for example), create link of the raster DCS.

2. Import the resulting DCS/EPS LINK file into Preps as a mark and place in a Preps template. The mark can be imported into Preps or Pandora, but note that the mark for Pandora must be PDF.

3. Modify the ImportAll process plan: Normalize for PostScript Marks Files>> Do OPI.

4. Save Process Plan.

5. In new job set Image Search Path to hires DCS marks.

6. Import PJTF from job which contains raster uncalibrated marks. Prinergy will recompose the DCS into composite when it OPIs it in. 7. Proceed with your normal Prinergy imposition workflow.

.

CAUTION: If you have the Copydot JTP with color calibration enabled, the Harmony curve WILL be applied to the pre-screened color bars. In this case, it is not possible to place uncalibrated marks into the color bar.

.

An alternate solution is to use Dotshop on the imposition PDF Marks file (in the System\Imposition folder) and convert all desired marks on all desired pages to use no calibration, or a specified desired screening. Note that on Final output, you would have to enable "Keep Dotshop settings".

.

Another solution that might work in some cases is to add a sheet mark (Layout pane) on output, and turn off the 'calibrate' checkbox. Note that this only works for marks added in this manner (outside of Preps). This does not work for marks added in Preps.
