Symptoms

When you insert an IBM^® Linear Tape-Open (LTO^™) media, it appears in the Unknown media subpool in Removable Storage Management (RSM). You cannot prepare the media.

When you try to drag and drop the media into the Free\Unknown subpool, a message appears that the media is write-protected. The media properties show that it is read-only.

Cause

The Tivoli Storage Manager driver is installed, instead of the RSM driver.

Solution

Install the RSM driver:

1. Uninstall the LTO3 tape drive using Device Manager.
1. On the server desktop, right-click My Computer and select Manage.
2. In the Computer Management window, in the left pane, select Device Manager.
3. Under Tape Devices in the right pane, right-click the IBM LTO3 device and select Uninstall.
2. In the LTO3 driver files (located in < SystemDrive >:\drivers), run the uninst.exe file.
3. Restart the server.
4. Reinstall the LTO driver.
1. On the server desktop, right-click My Computer and select Manage.
2. In the Computer Management window, in the left pane, select Device Manager.
3. Under ? Other devices in the right pane, right-click the IBM LTO3 device and select Properties.
4. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
Click Next. Select Display a list of known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and click Next.
5. In the Hardware Tape dialog box, select Tape drives, and click Next.
6. Select Have Disk.
7. Open the LTO3 driver folder (located in < SystemDrive >:\drivers).
8. From the list, select IBM ULTRIUM III TAPE DRIVE. Do not select the Tivoli Storage Manager drive.
9. Click OK.
10. Close the Computer Management window.
