Prinergy Workshop performance is slow

Product

Kodak® Prinergy® Connect™ version 4.0.x

Symptoms

Prinergy Workshop runs slowly. For example, it takes a long time to log on to Workshop, to navigate in Workshop, and to start tasks. Job Manager and Job Finder are slow to respond, or stop responding. The perfomance declines further when many jobs are being created.

Cause

The Workshop client computer stops responding when the “expensive columns” are visible in the job and pre-job tables of Job Finder. This happens because blocking calls to retrieve the information from the server are made synchronously on the AWT event thread.

Solution

For every workstation, workstation user, and Workshop user, turn off all visible columns that have asterisks beside their names in the Jobs and Pre-Jobs views.

Important: The workstation name, workstation user, and Workshop user settings are stored on the workstation (not on the server) at:

  • Mac® computer:
    MacHD\Users\<WorkstationUser>\Library\
    Application Support\Kodak\Workshop\
    <WorkshopUser>.props
  • Microsoft® Windows® computer:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<WorkstationUser>\
    Application Data\Kodak\Workshop\
    <WorkshopUser>.props

If you miss any combination of workstation/workstation user/Workshop user, the next time that combination is used, it may affect the performance of other combinations.

For each workstation, do the following:

  1. Log the workstation onto the network, using your normal user name and password.
  2. Start Prinergy Workshop and log on using your normal Workshop user name.
  3. In Job Finder, select View > Visible Columns.
  4. In the Job Columns list, clear the check boxes beside names that have an asterisk—for example, Page Approved*, Full Surfaces*.
Note: Be sure to clear the check boxes for all job columns that have asterisks.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In Job Finder, select View > Pre-Jobs.
  7. Select View > Visible Columns.
  8. In the Job Columns list, clear the check boxes beside names that have an asterisk.
  9. Repeat this procedure for each Workshop user that uses that workstation when it's logged onto the network with that name.
  10. If the workstation has multiple users that log onto the network, log off the workstation, log on as a different workstation user, and then repeat the procedure.

Example:
The Workshop user bhoskins uses the Mac1 workstation. The Mac1 workstation is connected to the network as prepress. The user bhoskins must do the following:

  1. Log on to the Mac1 workstation as prepress.
  2. Log on to Workshop as bhoskins.
  3. Turn off the visible columns marked with asterisks.

If the Mac1 workstation is sometimes connected to the network as colorprep, user bhoskins must do the following:

  1. Log on to the Mac1 workstation as colorprep.
  2. Log on to Workshop as bhoskins.
  3. Turn off the visible columns marked with asterisks.

If bhoskins also uses a workstation named Mac2, he must repeat the procedure on that workstation.

This problem is fixed in Prinergy 4.1.1.0.
