RBA and Link processes (AutomationApp.exe and SynapseLinkService.exe) consume too much CPU on Prinergy systems

Product

  • Kodak® Prinergy® 4.0.x to 4.0.2.2
  • Kodak Synapse® Link 2.0 and Link 2.1

Operating system

Microsoft® Windows®

Symptoms

The RBA AutomationApp.exe and Link SynapseLinkService.exe processes are using excessive CPU time (up to 100%), even on Prinergy systems that are not licensed for RBA. Only manual-start rule sets will run.

Cause

Hidden RBA rules that were distributed with Prinergy 4.0.x cause a notification to be sent to Link whenever a Prinergy output process fails. However, Link 2.x is older software that is unable process this type of message. The message is therefore continuously resent, leading to a very high CPU usage in both Prinergy and Link.

Solution

The hidden Link rule set that was distributed is currently not used by Link or any other Prinergy component and can therefore be deleted. An improved version of this rule set will be distributed with Prinergy 4.0.2.3.

To delete the Link rule set from the system:

  1. At the Prinergy primary server, open a DOS command prompt.
  2. Type
    [System Drive]\Program Files\Kodak\RBA\bin\
    RuleUtility.exe
  3. At the RuleUtility command prompt, type
    delete 'Link System/Link_Pgy_Rule_Set'-hidden -disable –abort
Important: There is no space between the rule path
    'Link System/Link_Pgy_Rule_Set' and –hidden.
  4. The RuleUtility command prompt should appear. If an error message such as Rule not found appears, repeat the procedure, taking extra care to type the exact syntax of the command.
  5. In Windows Task Manager, stop the WebServerApp.exe and AutomationApp.exe services.
