Error

In the application event log, you will see the following two events:

atkctrs description: Unable to open ATK device for R access. Returning IO Status Block in Data.

perflib description: The Open Procedure for service "AppleTalk" in DLL "D:\WINNT\system32\atkctrs.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. Status code returned is data DWORD 0.

Symptoms

The rendering processing engine executable, CSWRendProcessing.exe, won’t start up successfully. The controller that starts it waits 20 seconds for the executable to start successfully, and when it has not started up in that time, it quits the executable and starts another one, so the CSWRendProcessing.exe executable never starts. You can see this happening in the log file CSWDiagnostics.log. If you manually start the process from a command line, the process does eventually start, but takes longer than the allowed 20 seconds. Because no rendering engine starts successfully, no thumbnails are generated and elements cannot be viewed in Smart Review. This problem typically appears on a freshly ghosted system.

Cause

Part of the installation procedure when installing a server baseline ghost is to disable and then manaually re-enable the Appletalk protocol. If this is not performed, you may get the problem as specified above. The problem seems to be more common on Dell® PE2900 servers than PE2800 servers.

Solution

Disable and then re-enable the Appletalk protocol by completing the following steps:

  1. From the desktop, right-click My Network Places and select Properties.
  2. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
  3. Select Show icon in taskbar when connected.
  4. Click Configure. On the Power Management tab, clear all options and click OK.
  5. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, clear the AppleTalk Protocol checkbox and click OK
  6. Open the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box again, click the AppleTalk Protocol checkbox to select it, and click OK.
  7. Open the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box one more time, select AppleTalk Protocol and click Properties.
  8. Select Accept inbound connections on this adapter and click OK. If prompted to confirm the selection, click OK.
