InSite Desktop for Windows 3.1 installation fails, cannot install .NET Framework 3.5

Product

Kodak® InSite™ Creative Workflow and Asset Library 3.1

Platform

PC

Operating system

Microsoft® Windows® 2003, Vista, or XP

Symptoms

When trying to install Kodak InSite Desktop for Windows 3.1 for the first time, the installation wizard indicates that Microsoft .NET™ Framework 3.5 will also be installed, but the installation fails.

Cause

To run Desktop for Windows 3.1, you must also install Microsoft .NET™ Framework 3.5 on your Windows computer.

Typically, the Desktop installer automatically downloads  the .NET Framework from the Microsoft Web site and installs it for you. However, if your computer does not have access to the Web site (for example, because the computer is in a controlled LAN environment), the installer will be unable to download and install the .NET Framework.

Solution

First, verify your client computer's operating system. Desktop for Windows 3.1 can be installed on a computer running any of the following operating systems:

Windows 2000 is not supported.

Second, verify that Windows Installer 3.1 is installed on your computer. Open Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, and verify that Windows Installer 3.1 appears in the list of installed programs. (If you need to install Windows Installer 3.1, you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en.)

Third, download Desktop. The installation wizard starts. If you are running Windows Vista, .NET Framework 3.5 is already installed, so the .NET Framework installation step is bypassed. If you are running Windows 2003 or XP with SP2, when you start the Desktop download, the installer will try to install .NET Framework 3.5, if it isn't already installed.

To install the .NET Framework, the installer accesses the Microsoft Web site.

If the installer is able to download the .NET Framework files from the Microsoft Web site, the installation is automatic. Approximately 20-60 MB of data is downloaded, depending on which previous versions of the .NET Framework are already installed. The .NET installation can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on your Internet connection speed.

You may be prompted to restart your computer after .NET is installed. After you restart the computer, you must restart the Desktop installer to complete the Desktop installation.

If the Desktop installer encounters a problem downloading the .NET files from Microsoft (for example, because your computer does not have access to the Microsoft Web site), the installer stops the installation process and displays an error message. In this case, you must work with your system administrator to obtain and install the .NET Framework through other means.

You can also download the .NET Framework 3.5 Redistributable Package from http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/0/f/60fc5854-3cb8-4892-b6db-bd4f42510f28/dotnetfx35.exe. The Redistributable Package can be placed on optical media or on a corporate file server so that users in your organization can install the .NET Framework without accessing the Internet. Note, however, that this download is approximately 200 MB.
