Optical Fiber Cleaning

Description

The optical fiber transfers the laser beam from the laser to the dynamic optics, and from there to the film surface.

The fiber is sectioned into two parts. One part belongs to the static optic and the other is connected to the dynamic optic. Each end is fixed with a ceramic connector. The optical connector adaptor unit mates the two connectors.

The optical fiber connection is located on the left side of the imagesetter. To reach the assembly, open the left service door. Remove the protective cover from the lower compartment of the Dolev 800.

Assembling the Optic Fiber

Required Materials

The Materials needed are included in the Fiber Optics Cleaning Kit:

Alcohol
Optical grease (T 1034, coupling gel)
Adaptor brush
Small Cutter
Buffer stripper (Siemens 0.60/1.00)
Coating stripper (Siemens 0.18/0.30)
Cleaving tool (ATT, #103 808 770)
Splice (Siecor, #95 000 04)

Before You Start

1. Read the laser power on the solar cell. Use this value as a reference value on completion of the procedure.
   
   
2. The connectors are connected together with optical gel. It is recommended to clean the connectors and to apply new optical gel every six months.
   
   
3. The connector is sensitive to scratches. Handle with care.

Remove Connector

1. Turn the connector a half turn and pull it out, or unscrew the connector (depending on the type of connector).
   
   
2. Cover the connector with a red cap supplied in the fiber optic cleaning kit.
   
   
3. Cover the open side of the adaptor with the cover supplied in the fiber optic cleaning kit.
   
   
4. Use the same method for the other side of the fiber.

Cleaning

1. Fold a piece of rice paper, taking care not to touch the cleaning area.
   
   
2. Soak the folded paper with alcohol (be careful, acetone is forbidden).
   
   
3. Gently wipe the connectors of dirt and the remains of the optical coupling gel.

Remove Fiber from Adaptor

1. Turn the connector a half turn and take the fiber out of the adaptor.
   
   
2. Clean the connector. Use the adaptor brush to clean the adaptor (supplied in the fiber optic cleaning kit). Make sure that no dirt, dust or lint is left by an air stream from compressed air can.

Assembling the Optic Fiber

1. Put a small thin layer of optical coupling gel on one connector.
   
   
2. Gently attach one connector to the other connector in order to leave a thin layer of gel on both connectors.
   
   
3. Remove the caps from the adaptor.
   
   
4. Fasten the two connectors back into place.
   
   
5. Check if the laser reading is the same as before.
