Physical Description

Film loading, unloading and cutting are performed automatically on the Dolev 800. Some of the important parts of the loading system include: the film storage, the rollers to feed the film into the opto-mechanical assembly and the film cutter system.

Introduction

Refer to the workflow diagram to follow the exposure process.

When the Dolev 800 is ready for exposure, the operating panel message is, "STANDBY." The carriage is in HOME position.

Exposure Request

The operator enters the exposure specifications and requests an exposure.
The parameters are sent to the OMC board on the Standard Controller.

Film Feed

The length of film requested by the operator is loaded onto the drum.An encoder is mounted on the left-most pressure roller press wheel. The encoder measures the film length. The encoder rotates only when the film moves. The feeder motor is stopped when the correct film length is measured. The information on film length is sent to a table on a non volatile memory (NVM) chip. The NVM updates the film length parameter on the NVM table. The system uses this value to calculate the amount of film in the loading cassette.

Cutter Assembly Cuts Film

The film is cut by the cutter assembly. The cutter assembly "home position" is at either end of the drum. At home position, the body of the cutter assembly forces the film restraining plates apart. The loaded film passes between these bars. When the cutter moves out of home position, a set of springs draw the locking bars together and tightly hold the loaded film in place. The cutter cuts the film.

Relay Drivers Signal Film Forward Motor

A short length of film lies between the cutter assembly and the pressure rollers. When the film is cut, a signal is sent to the Relay Drivers. In return, the Relay Drivers signal the film forward motor to advance until the remaining piece of film is loaded onto the drum.

Film is Rolled To End Position

Film Roller End Position

The vacuum pump is activated by a signal from the Relay Drivers.

The film roller is activated. The roller smoothes the film against the drum. The vacuum mechanism suctions the film to the body of the drum. A roller encoder on the film roller motor signals the roller motor when to halt the roller arm. The point where the roller stops is referred to as its end position.

Film Exposure

The film exposure begins. The dynamic optics, mounted on the carriage, moves along the lead screw from the left to the right of the drum.

Post Exposure

At the end of the exposure, first the carriage returns to home position followed by the film roller. At home position, the roller shifts away from the drum.

When the roller shifts away from the drum, the film unloading channel is ready. The Feeder Motor runs in reverse direction to send the exposed film toward the output cassette or the online processor.

The Exposure Cycle

  1. Film Unloading
  2. Cassette In detector active (1 of 3)
    Home position detector on

  3. Locking Lever detector closed

  4. Film In Cassette detector

  5. 1.     Roller to End position
    2.     Carriage to Home Position

  6. Roller Home Position Det. On Roller to Home Position

  7. 1.     Cutter to Right (If cutter is already right, it stays in place.)
    2.     Vacuum Motor on
    3.     Cassette Motor on (loads film toward drum area)
    4.     Film Feeder Motor on (picks up film sent by cassette motor)

  8. 1.     Film In detector on (left and right)
    2.     Film Encoder on (measures length of loaded film)
    3.     Cassette Motor off (film is in drum area, not cut, not attached)
    4.     Film Feeder Motor off (once correct % of film is loaded inside drum)

  9. 1.     Cutter Motor on
    2.     Cutter Position Detector on
    3.      Cutter Motor off
    4.      Film Feeder Motor on (load direction)

  10. 1.     Film In detectors off
    2.     Film Feeder Motor off
    3.     Cassette film Motor on (in reverse for 0.2 seconds)

  11. 1.     Vacuum valves on three second delay as vacuum is created
    2.     Vacuum sensors on
    3.     Roller Motor forward
    4.     Roller encoder counter
    5.     Feeder motor forward for 70 mSec. to spread the film around the drum

  12. 1.     Exposure begins.
    2.     Carriage Home Position detector is on.
    3.     Roller goes to home position.
    4.     Roller Home Position detector is on.
    5.     Film unloading selected: To output cassette or conveyor.

Disassemble the Film Loading System

Tools and Accessories
Disassemble the Film Loading System (Remove...)

Before You Start

  1. Much of the service requires only that the assembly be unlocked and moved
forward. This level of service does not demand a second engineer.

  2. Before you remove the loading and unloading system, make sure you have
enough space around the machine to pull out the assembly.

Tools and Accessories

Flat screwdriver
Phillips screwdriver

Disassemble the Film Loading System (Remove...)

  1. Power off the Imagesetter using the control panel ON/OFF switch.

  2. Open the left and right service doors. Open the unloading cassette door and release the door locks.

  3. Open the loading system compartment doors.

  4. Remove the light-proof covers (#137, #132) )from both sides of the unit.

  5. Disconnect the electronic harness cables from the connector panel (#93) on the right side of the Imagesetter.

  6. Remove the E-ring (#84) that secures the top of the left lift-o-mat piston (#59). Tilt the piston downwards.

  7. Open the two track locks on each side of the system.

  8. Grasp the handles from both sides and gently pull the system forward
    10 cm.

  9. Remove the three film loading cassettes (in order to reduce weight). Put them in a darkroom.

  10. Carefully pull the system forward and away from the Imagesetter.

  11. Place the system on a solid surface.

Note: To test the unit while it is outside of the machine, connect the electronic harnesses and turn on the power (the cables are long enough to allow this).

Install (Replace) Loading System on Imagesetter

Install (Replace) Loading System on Imagesetter

Before You Start

  1. Two engineers are required when removing the assembly. Do not attempt to
remove the system from the Imagesetter unless at least two engineers are
    present.

  2. Much of the service requires only that the assembly be unlocked and moved forward. This level of service does not demand a second engineer.

  3. Before you remove the loading and unloading system, make sure you have
enough space around the machine to pull out the assembly.

Tools and Accessories

Flat screwdriver

Phillips screwdriver

Install (Replace) Loading System on Imagesetter

  1. With an engineer on each side of the assembly, lift the replacement assembly into place. Set the wheels of the new unit on the tracks.

  2. Connect the electrical harness.

  3. Push the assembly as far as it goes in a steady motion.

  4. Close the track locks and again push the unit gently until you hear the assembly click into place.

  5. Fasten the light-proof covers. Re-assemble the E-ring (#84) that secures the top of the left lift-o-mat piston.

  6. Close the side service doors.
