Overview

The following procedures for the use of a new measurement kit (Catalog Number 509G35525) are designed to help overcome distortions of drum bow and linearity on the Dolev 800 Imagesetter. The kit uses a modified microscope
and laptop computer to make adjustments.

Note the following facts about drum bow and linearity:
Beam parallelism effects bow and linearity.
Beam concentricity does not effect bow and linearity.
The last static mirror and the dynamic optics are the major sub-assemblies causing bow and linearity problems.
Bow and linearity errors are perpendicular (90o) to each other.
When the bow is maximal, linearity is minimal, and vice versa.

Preparing the Machine Grid

The Grid100.MEAS Film

  1. Remove the magnetic tape, or whichever media is required, from the film          measurement system kit.

  2. Load the file, GRID100.MEAS, onto the CreoScitex Color Workstation.

  3. Expose the black separation only, and develop the film.

  4. Remove the film from the processor and place it, emulsion-side up, on a light table (Fig. 1-1). Use the orientation below:

    1. Black crosses in upper left corners of section A and B.
    2. Headline text right-reading up.
    3. Film label (header) in the top right corner, wrong-reading down.

Assembling the Kit

  1. Remove the contents of the box:
    • Microscope.
    • CCD interface box.
    • Foot switch.
    • Operating software: one (1) diskette.
    • Cables:
      Power cable.
      RS-232 cable.
    • Magnetic tape and other media which include the file GRID100.MEAS.

  2. Connect the foot switch to the CCD I/F box.

  3. Connect the flat cable between the microscope and the CCD I/F box.

  4. Connect the other two cables, ODD to ODD, EVEN to EVEN, between the          microscope and the CCD I/F box.

  5. Connect the RS-232 cable between the computer and the CCD I/F box.

  6. Connect the CCD I/F box power cord to a power source. Check that the READY LED is lit.

  7. Remove the master grid film, and the master grid diskette, from the Master  Grid box. Place the 7 mil film on top of the GRID100.MEAS film, on the light table. The headline "T.L." should be in the top left corner of the master grid film. All the other headlines should be right-reading up. The film has no header.

  8. Switch on the computer.

  9. Install the operating software diskette into drive A.

    1. Type a: and press <Enter>.
At the prompt a:> type: install and press <Enter>.
The program moves to the c: drive, to the directory \meas.
    2. At the prompt d:\meas, type measure. You receive three choices:
      1. Measure grid
      2. Analyze
      3. Quit
    3. On the following screens, select 1. Measure grid, Products <Enter>, Dolev 800 <Enter>, Measurement <Enter>.
    4. Type in the serial number found on the master grid film.
    5. Select 1. Bow, or 2. Linearity.

  10. Follow the instructions on the screen. (Remember, order of measurement of bow and linearity is first bow, and then linearity.)

Bow Measurement

Calibrating the Microscope with the Master Grid Film
Measuring GRID100. MEAS Film, Section A
Measuring GRID100. MEAS Film, Section B

Calibrating the Microscope with the Master Grid Film
  1. Allow the GRID100.MEAS film to rest on the table for 30 minutes after its removal from the processor.

  2. Insert the master grid diskette into drive A.

  3. Calibrate the microscope. The field of view of the microscope is that part of  the film visible through the hole in the target holder.

    1. Place the microscope on the master grid film so that the cross-hairs on the microscope target cover the cross on junction 23. This is near the cal 6 mm headline.
    2. Look through the target holder hole: two calibration lines should be visible.
    3. Make sure that only the master grid film information is visible through the field of view. If any part of the GRID100.MEAS film is visible, you will receive incorrect results.
    4. To calibrate the lines, press any computer key, or depress the foot switch.
    5. When calibration is complete, press <Enter>.
  4. Remove the master grid film from the light table.
Measuring GRID100. MEAS Film, Section A

If the film is too large for the light table, cut the film along the cutting line. The line is clearly marked along the middle of the film.

  1. Place GRID100.MEAS, Section A on the light table with the "T.L.A" headline in the top left corner, right-reading up.

  2. Place the master grid film on top of the GRID100.MEAS film. Use the targets on both films to align the films. The master grid film "T.L" headline must be right-reading up in the top left corner, near the GRID100.MEAS film "T.L.A" headline.

  3. Tape the master grid film to the GRID100.MEAS film.

  4. Follow the instructions on the monitor. The first row of GRID100.MEAS, Section A is measured by master grid film junctions 1 to 7.

  5. Measure the linearity (drum) direction of junctions 1 to 7, and 41 to 47.

  6. Measure the bow (lead screw) direction of junctions 1, 4, 7 to 11, 14, 17 to 21, 24, 27 to 31, 34, 37 to 41, 44 and 47.

  7. Remove section A from the light table.
Measuring GRID100. MEAS Film, Section B
  1. Place GRID100.MEAS, Section B on the light table with the "T.L.B" headline in the top left corner, right-reading up.

  2. Place the master grid film on top of the GRID100.MEAS film. Use the targets on both films to align the films. The master grid film "T.L" headline must be in the top left corner, near the GRID100.MEAS "T.L.B" headline.

  3. Tape the master grid film to the GRID100.MEAS film.

  4. Follow the instructions on the monitor. The first row of GRID100.MEAS, Section B is measured by master grid film junctions 101 to 107.

  5. Measure the linearity (drum) direction of junctions101 to 107.

  6. Measure the bow (lead screw) direction of junctions 101, 104, 107, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 17 to 21, 24, 27 to 31, 34, 37 to 41, 44 and 47.

  7. Look for the message, Measurement end. Quit to analyze, on the monitor.
    Press <Esc> twice.

  8. Select Quit. You are now returned to the screen 1. Measure grid, 2. Analyze, 3. Quit.

  9. Select 2. Analyze. The bow graph and correction instructions are displayed.
Reminder: Write down the bow graph and the correction instructions before you select 1. Measure grid. When1. Measure grid is selected, previous data results of the bow graph are deleted.

  10. Select <Enter> to move to the next screen.

  11. Follow the correction instructions. Repeat the process until the bow results are within the tolerance. When the results are acceptable, perform linearity measurement.

Linearity Measurement

  1. Return to the screen 1. Bow, 2. Linearity.

  2. Select 2. Linearity.

  3. Complete the same procedure for the bow measurement.

  4. Measure the junctions listed below.

  5. For GRID100.MEAS, Section A, measure the linearity(drum) direction and the bow (lead screw) direction of junctions 1 to 7, 11 to 17, 21 to 27, 31 to 37 and 41 to 47.

  6. For GRID100.MEAS, Section B, measure the linearity (drum) direction and the bow (lead screw) direction of junctions 101 to 107, 11 to 17, 21 to 27, 31 to 37 and 41 to 47.

  7. When the message Measurement end. Quit to Analyze appears on the monitor, press <Esc> twice.

  8. Select Quit. You are now returned to the screen 1. Measure grid, 2. Analyze, 3. Quit.

  9. Select 2. Analyze. The total linearity error is displayed. This error is corrected by the software.

  10. The system prompts you to insert a diskette; and then creates a correction table file: CORRGRID.PRM.

  11. Copy the file to the imagesetter. Repeat the procedure until linearity is within the tolerance.

Microscope Set Up

The Microscope

The following procedure is intended to correct any microscope assembly misalignment.

Set up the assembly (microscope, CCD I/F box, and computer) as described
in - Assembling the Kit

Focus Test

  1. Perform the focus test using diagnostics.

  2. In the computer, type cd/meas, <Enter>, measure, <Enter>.

  3. Choose 1. Measure Grid, Diagnostics, <Enter>, Test Focus, <Enter>.

  4. Place the microscope on the CAL lines.

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen, and check that the rise gap is within the tolerance (less than 15 pixels). The message on screen reads: "Number of pixels in ascending edge of first/second line."

  6. If focus test passes, continue to measure magnification using diagnostics. If the focus test fails, follow the instructions here to fix the focus.

  7. Open the CCD I/F box top cover. Connect the video test point and the AGND = analog ground to an oscilloscope.

  8. Place the microscope on the master grid film in the following way (emulsion-side down)

  9. Look at the signal on the scope. The signal edge should be as sharp as possible, and should contain as few pixels as possible.

  10. If the signal shows de-focus, or poor focus quality, open the upper two set screws of the microscope, then raise or lower the top tube (CCD assy) till the signal shows good focus quality. Tighten the upper two set screws. Make sure that the two signs on the top and main tubes coincide.

  11. Repeat the focus test, using diagnostics.

Magnification Test

  1. In the computer type: cd\meas <Enter> measure <Enter>.

  2. Choose 1. Measure grid, diagnostics, <Enter> meas. gap. The microscope should remain as described in "Focus Test". Follow the instructions on the screen. The gap should be 530±10 pixels. If the gap is not within the tolerance, open the lower two set screws, then raise or lower the main tube till the meas. gap test in diagnostics succeeds (530±10 pixels).

  3. Perform the focus test through the diagnostics again

Checking Results

  1. Check both focus and magnification again, making sure the results are correct.

  2. If the tests still fail, the following procedure should be followed.
Warning: This procedure will cancel previous correct test results.

  3. Place a ring under the top tube of the microscope (CCD assy), and tighten it.

  4. Open the upper two set screws, and rotate the top tube until the two signs on the top and main tubes coincide. Tighten the set screws.

  5. Rerun the focus and magnification tests.

  6. Tighten all set screws. Open the set screws one at a time, add locktite, and close. Tighten all set screws.
