Installing rear panel floating nut assemblies

Product

  • Lotem™ 800
  • Lotem 800 Quantum
  • Lotem 800 Quantum with Spectrum

Background

Sometimes the screws that secure the rear lower and upper panels to the Lotem 800 chassis become bent, stripped and/or broken due to excessive pressure. When this happens, floating nut assemblies can be installed to relieve some of the pressure on the securing screws.

This document details the floating nut assembly installation procedure.

Requirements

  • Floating nut assembly jig kit (part number 510K3R613)
  • Floating nut assembly kit (part number 510J6L044)

Procedure

This procedure includes the following steps:

Preparation

  1. From the PC controller, shut down the machine.
  2. Disconnect the power supply to the machine by pressing one of the yellow pushbuttons at the rear of the machine.
  3. Remove the rear upper and lower panels.
  4. Deactivate the three circuit breakers on the distribution box at the rear of the machine.
  5. Unplug the main power cord from the wall outlet.
  6. From the rear of the machine, remove the laser interlock defeater as follows:
    1. Locate the laser interlock defeater assembly on the rear left of the machine (on your right, shown below).
    2. From the inside of the assembly, disconnect the connector labeled “FOCUS INT”.
    3. Remove the two interlock defeater securing screws (shown above) and remove the defeater by pulling it out of the assembly.
    4. Remove the four interlock defeater assembly securing screws (shown in the two pictures below), and then remove the assembly from the chassis and place it in a convenient place.
  7. On either the right or left rear of the machine, remove the four lowest side-door axis securing screws (circled in the picture below), lock washers and spring washers, and set them aside.
  8. Repeat step 7 on the other side of the machine.
  9. Drill the floating nut assembly securing holes as described in the next section.

Drilling the floating nut assembly securing holes

The supplied parts used in this section of the procedure are included in the floating nut assembly jig kit (part number 510K3R613).

  1. Place the floating nut assembly jig over the side-door axis and secure it to the chassis using the four 8-32*3/4" screws (part number 380A05101, circled in the picture below) that are supplied in the jig kit.
Note: Do not apply Loctite™ to any of the screws.
  2. Using the floating nut assembly jig as a guide, use the supplied 4 mm drill bit (part number 395A10250) to drill six holes into the chassis—one above and one below each large hole as shown below.
  3. Insert one of the supplied 6-32*7/8" Allen™ screws into each of the six holes you just drilled, and from inside the machine, place one of the supplied flat washers (part number 382A07006) and hex nuts #6-32 (part number 381A03001) on each screw. Firmly tighten each screw.
Note: Do not apply Loctite to any of the screws.
  4. Insert the supplied 5/16*-18*1 1/2" Allen screws (part number 380A11200) into one of the large holes in the jig as shown below, and tighten it in place until the threaded swage nut is pushed out of the chassis. Discard the swage nut and remove the 5/16*-18*1 1/2" Allen screw.
  5. Repeat step 4 in the remaining two large holes in the jig.
  6. Remove the six hex nuts, flat washers and 6-32*7/8" Allen screws from the jig and remove the jig from the chassis.
  7. Use the 82° countersink drill bit (part number 395A10260) that is included in the floating nut assembly jig kit to countersink each of the six holes that you previously drilled into the chassis.
  8. Vacuum all debris from the area.
  9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 of this section on the other side of the machine.
  10. Place all floating nut assembly jig kit parts back in the kit bag and return the kit to stock.
  11. Install the floating nut assemblies as described in the next section.

Installing the floating nut assemblies

The supplied parts used in this section of the procedure are included in the floating nut assembly kit (part number 510J6L044).

  1. Assemble the floating nut assemblies as follows:
    • Locate nut holder number 1 (two each, part number 290A9C134), and place one of the supplied 1/4-20" speed nuts (part number 381S09100) in each one.
Important: The assemblies made up of nut holder number 1 must be installed in the middle holes in right and left of the chasses.
    • Locate nut holder number 2 (four each, part number 290A9C135), and place one of the supplied 1/4-20" speed nuts (part number 381S09100) in each one.
    • Important: The assemblies made up of nut holder number 2 must be installed in the upper and lower holes on the right and left of the chasses.
  2. Place one floating nut assembly on the inside of each large hole in the chassis, and secure each one in place using two of the supplied 6-32*1/2 Philips flat head screws (part number 380G03040) as shown below.
Important: Ensure that the two assemblies made up of nut holder number 1 are installed in the middle hole on the right and on the left side.
Note: Be sure to apply Loctite 242 to each screw.
  3. Secure the interlock defeater assembly to the chassis using the four screws that you previously removed.
  4. Place the interlock defeater back into the interlock defeater assembly and secure it in place using the two screws that you previously removed.
  5. On the inside of the interlock defeater assembly, reconnect the connector labeled “FOCUS INT”.
  6. On both the right and left rear of the machine, replace the four side-door axis securing screws that you previously removed (eight total) and tighten them securely.
Note: Be sure to apply Loctite 242 to each screw.
  7. Plug the main power cord into the wall outlet.
  8. Activate the three circuit breakers on the distribution box at the rear of the machine.
  9. Replace the rear lower panel and tighten the panel securing screws.
  10. Replace the rear upper panel and tighten the panel securing screws.
  11. Start up the machine and verify that no open interlock messages appear in the PC controller.
