Description |
If the balance weight actuators are engaged and attempts to position them by rotating the drum fail, the balance weight assembly may have seized. Running the drum at high speeds for an extended period of time with the balance weight actuators extended could cause the friction disks in the balance weight assembly to overheat. |

Solutions |
Solution 1: Check the status of the balance weight actuators by issuing the bal command. When the actuators are retracted, both sensors will detect the presence of the piston rod. Visually verify the sensor feedback agrees with the physical position of the actuators. If the sensor feedback disagrees, check the pneumatic and electrical wiring of air cylinders, solenoid valves, and sensors. If the sensor wiring and pneumatic wiring is correct and the balance weight actuators are engaged, manually retract them by first shutting off the compressed air supply at the pressure regulator. Next, disconnect pneumatic lines going to the actuators. Retract the piston by hand. Be careful not to damage the sensors while doing so. Idle the drum and rotate by hand. If the drum position is still locked, look for a mechanical blockage. At each end of the drum, locate the weight disks (two per side). A force of 10-14lbf should be sufficient to rotate each weight relative to the drum. If the weight assembly is extremely hot, wait until it has cooled and retest. If any one of the weight disks cannot be freely moved, the weight assembly must be replaced. Replacement of the balance weight assembly requires specialized tools and equipment.
