Plate throughput too slow on Trendsetter NEWS TSM (MCE) output devices with TH2 heads

Product

  • Trendsetter NEWS (TSM)

Component

  • Firmware configuration (MCE or TH2), or
  • Print Console configuration (Print Setups > TIFF Downloader)

Symptoms

Plate throughput is too slow; does not meet device specifications.

Cause

Cause may be one or more of the following:
  • Verbose reporting level set too high (Service, Expert, or Debug). If set to Debug (worst case), Print Console may display a runtime error and then crash.

Important: For field service, the highest verbose reporting level that should be used is "Service." Do not set verbose to "Expert" or "Debug" unless acting under the supervision of Product Development.

  • Focus reuse not enabled.
  • Drum speed is too low.
  • Plate rotation in Print Console's print setup is set to something other than 90 degrees.
  • Mirroring in Print Console's print setup is set to something other than around drum.

Solution

  1. Ensure that verbose level is set to "customer" on MCE NVS and "off" or "disabled" on thermal head NVS.

    NEWS 150 and NEWS 200
    Enter commands:
    NEWS>> verbose default
(default sets verbose level to customer)
    NEWS>> redirect enable
    TH2 > eng
    TH2 > vbs disable all
    TH2 > redirect disable

    NEWS200 only
    MSFW>> verbose off all
    MSFW>> redirect enable
    TH2 > eng
    TH2 > vbs disable all
    TH2 > redirect disable

  2. Ensure that focus reuse is enabled.

    NEWS 150 and NEWS 200
    NEWS>> set focus LearnSkip True

    NEWS 200 only
    MSFW>> set focus LearnSkip True

  3. Ensure that the drum speed is correct. See the MCE firmware release notes for the appropriate Controlled Release to confirm.

To set the specific media used set to 345 rpm

    NEWS 150 and NEWS 200
    NEWS>> redirect enable
    TH2 > eng
    TH2 > set med <n> drumspeed <xxx>
where <n> is the media number and <xxx> is the drum speed in RPM

Note: media 1 in MCE setup corresponds to med 0 in the thermal head setup, so media 2 = med 1, media 3 = med 2, and so on.

    TH2 > redirect disable

    NEWS 200 only
    MSFW>> redirect enable
    TH2 > eng
    TH2 > set med <n> drumspeed <xxx>
where <n> is the media number and <xxx> is the drum speed in RPM (see note, above).
    TH2 > redirect disable
  4. In Print Console's Print Setups pane, click the TIFF Downloader tab, and ensure that rotation is set to *90 degrees and mirroring is set to Around drum.

  5. Verify that the NEWS device now meets its throughput spec by following the instructions in Measuring throughput of Trendsetter NEWS output devices.
