Picker version 3: Replacing vacuum cups

Product

  • Trendsetter Autoloader
  • Trendsetter NEWS

Background

The Picker 3 vacuum cups should be replaced during preventive maintenance (PM) visits, or when they are worn or torn.

Requirements

Required:

  • Replacement vacuum cups (part number 55-0706)

Optional:

  • Mylar strip (57-6640A)—TS AL only (not required for TS NEWS)
  • Six small tee fittings (55-0743)
  • Two elbow fittings (55-0643)
  • Four 3 mm-to-1.5 mm tube adapters (55-0744)
  • Small (1.5 mm ID) blue tubing (56-3281)
  • Large Tee fittings (55-0536)

WARNING: Before working on the picker assembly, you must ensure that the safety interlock override (SIO) key switch is in the Normal Operation position with the key removed. The Override position is only to be used for observation and diagnostic purposes.

See Safety Policies for Service Engineers for details on using the SIO key switch.

WARNING: The compressed air supply must remain turned on while you are working on the picker assembly, to prevent:

  • the picker from dropping by gravity
    and/or
  • the picker head/vacuum cup assembly from becoming limp and difficult to work with.

If the compressed air supply is turned off while you are working on the picker, a hazard exists, because re-energization of the compressed air supply results in sudden, unexpected movement of the picker assembly, which can seriously injure any body part in its path.

If you suspect that the compressed air supply has been turned off (for example, because the picker drops by gravity and/or the picker head/vacuum cup assembly becomes limp), you must immediately stop working on the picker and close the access panel before investigating why the device or plant air supply has been interrupted. If there is a problem with the plant air supply, then lock out the device air supply until it has been restored, and keep the access panel closed until the device air supply has been re-energized. See Safety Policies for Service Engineers for details on lockout procedures.

Procedure

Before you begin:

Check the vacuum level before you replace the vacuum cups. See procedure. Record the level as a reference for later.

To access the picker vacuum cups:

  1. Enter command:
    picker up
  2. Ensure that the compressed supply remains turned on, to avoid the hazard described in the second warning, above.
  3. Open the bay door.
  4. Open the manual bypass door for better access.

To replace the vacuum cups:

  1. Ensure that the SIO key switch is set to the Normal Operation postion, and that the key is removed from the switch.
  2. Remove the Mylar strip. [Trendsetter AL only]
  3. Place a small plate under the picker head assembly to catch any small pieces that might be dropped.

  4. With a short, sharp tug, remove 1.5-mm air tube from the air fitting on the vacuum cup closest to the home end of the device.
  5. Holding the vacuum cup with one hand, use an 11-mm wrench to remove the nylon nut and air fitting attaching the cup assembly to the picker head.

  6. Place the vacuum cup assembly on the plate you put under the picker head in step 2.
  1. Examine the air fitting and replace if necessary.
  2. Discard the old vacuum cup and replace it with a new one (55-0706). Attach the new vacuum cup to the picker head with the washers, nylon nut, and air fitting.
  3. Inspect the hoses and reducer fitting between the vacuum cup assembly you just replaced and the one next to it. Replace any worn or damaged hoses or fittings.

  4. Repeat steps 3–8 for the remaining vacuum cups.
  5. Replace the Mylar strip. Refer to FCO D174 for the procedure. [Trendsetter Autoloader only]

Test

  1. Again, check the vacuum level as you did before replacing the vacuum cups. The vacuum level with a plate picked should be at least as high as it was when you measured it before replacing the cups.
  2. Check the vacuum threshold level as described in Measuring the picker vacuum level and setting the vacuum threshold. If necessary, adjust the vacuum threshold level.
