Power supply failure: carriage amp fault (error number 12006)

Applies to

  • VLF Trendsetter
  • VLF Platesetter

Description

Carriage drive reported an improper function.

Causes

"12006 Power Supply Failure: Carriage Amp Fault" is a carriage overcurrent error message. It is generated on the Carriage Motor Drive board and fed back via the backplane and ALE to the MPE.

Signals for this error are generated on the Carriage Motor Drive board (10-1312C). The signal passes out through connector J5 to the backplane (10-0730C), then into J14, which is marked "Plate Picker I/F Cable". From there the signal goes through the backplane, out of J702 (pins 25B and 25C), to the ALE board (10-3691A). It displays on the ALE board on the red LED DS1061.

The signal also goes to a register that is read by the MPE through the main data bus.

The overcurrent signal is generated by a PAL and is probably based on some voltage condition (possibly the drive voltage hitting the rail, since it does not appear to have a current sensor).

Solutions

Remotely reset the device and check if the error comes back during initialization. If the error is still there, cycle the power of the machine.

Do "mask on 11" and save it using "nvs save status 1" and "reset".

If the error is still there, during an onsite visit:

  • Check carriage psteps.  It should be 64, but you can try 52 or 40.
  • Measure the 80V on TP11 on the Carriage Motor Drive board when the error occurs
  • Measure ±12V and +5V on TP7, TP8, and TP9 when the error occurs
  • Type 'carriage home' and check for a sine and cosine wave going to the Carriage Motor Drive board. Use an oscilloscope on TP1 and TP5 (CMA CMB).
  • Measure +5V on pin 8 or 10 or 12 of U21 on the Carriage Motor Drive board to check carriage power
  • Check that all the card cage boards are seated properly
  • Check that the cables from the card cage to the carriage board are connected securely

If all the cables and voltages are fine, replace the ALE board (10-3691A).
