- The compactor should not operate (retract or extend) if the rollers are held open by any object other than a slipsheet.
- Using a piece of metal about 5mm thick, close the rollers with the metal pinched between the wheels at one end of the roller shaft.
- Actuate the compactor in either direction. Adjust the compactor's roller closed safety switch until the mechanism almost, but not quite, connects the circuit.
- Repeat for the other side and center.
If the compactor does not activate with rollers properly closed, a wire could be broken or the limit switches could be set back too far to activate. If the safety loop were involved, the rollers would not have closed in the first place.
- The end of travel sensor may have malfunctioned.
- Relay malfunction. The compactor's end of travel is a single output used on two sensors. The system is connected to the extended or retracted switches based on the position of a relay that is driven by the signal operating the compactor solenoid. Once the compactor solenoid is switched, the relay causes the system to look at the sensor at the other end of travel.
- End of travel sensors are out of position. The sensors (on the underside of the chassis near the bell crank) should be set such that once the bell crank has reached end of travel, the switch position should be such that it is ~½ way between the bottom out position of the switch and the initial contact point of the contacts, easy to feel by hand as there is a noticeable change in resistance.
- End of travel sensor wires are disconnected. Check the wiring for breaks, snags or pulled out crimp connectors
- There may be a problem with the safety loop.
The safety loop sensors must also be tested by performing extend and retract commands and opening the door or lifting the safety guard while the command is being executed. The machine should cease to function immediately. Also note, the rollers should not have closed in the first place if the loop was open.
- A double slipsheet pick may have occurred.
The compactor can handle two VLF sheets, but occasionally may jam. Clear the paper and check the plate stack for double slipsheets.
