02 Oct 2003: Perfectly Good TFX Heads Returned For Repair More...

During 2002-2003 a total of 16 TFX heads were returned. Five of these heads had failed laser diodes and were repaired. However, eight heads were determined to be working correctly and after extensive testing they were returned to stock. In most cases, no information was submitted with the returned head.

To save time and money in the factory, we need to know what is wrong with a head.

The “No Fault Found” heads are costing Creo money. Shipping costs average US$950. Typical turn around time is about 2 months. During this time the head counts towards inventory and the calculated cost of this inventory is US$1300 per head. Therefore, every time the bag containing a head is opened unnecessaraly, it costs Creo more than US$2000.
TFX heads are very reliable - please do all you can to ensure it really is a defective head before you replace it. The product specialists are available to offer a second opinion if you need one. (Contact info for the specialists is available on TechPlanet or from the Escalation link below).

02 Jul 2003: Posssible TFX Head Window Defects More...

Risk of defect identified with TFX Optical Window, P/N 30-1170A.
Some of the TFX head windows manufactured in the past year are defective. The nature of the defect means the window will not withstand repeated cleaning, possibly causing image artifacts. The root cause of the problem is a defective anti-reflective coating on the bare window (purchased). There is no way of knowing how many of these defective windows are at customer sites, and unfortunately there is no way to check in the field if a window is defective or not. To date, the problem has only surfaced at one site.

13 Aug 2001: Solve Focus Problems Using the FOC LEARNGAIN Parameter
The FOC LEARNGAIN parameter controls the speed and stability of the focus learning system. When we are learning focus, we multiply the error by the FOC LEARNGAIN parameter. This allows us to more quickly arrive at the correct lens position. However, if the gain is too large, then we can encounter instability, causing the lens position and focus error to oscillate endlessly. Hence, it is important that we find the correct FOC LEARNGAIN value for each device, ensuring fast and stable focus learning.
We typically use a default FOC LEARNGAIN of 0.035 with TFX firmware 1.04. This value has proven to work for most heads in most situations. However, we have occasionally encountered focus errors due to poor FOC LEARNGAIN settings in the TFX head. The focus errors are characterized by two problems:

  1. The plot fails during head stage zero, with the message 'Failed to lock lens at desired position'.
  2. The focus errors on the plot are out of range, oscillating, and becoming worse.
Either of these problems may be intermittent, and you may not see both errors in all cases. In any event, both errors have been solved successfully in the past by changing the FOC LEARNGAIN parameter. In order to adjust the FOC LEARNGAIN parameter, use the following procedure:
  1. In the TFX window, type 'eng' to ensure that you are in engineering mode.
  2. Check the value of FOC LEARNGAIN by typing 'set foc learngain'.
  3. Decrease FOC LEARNGAIN by 0.005 by typing 'set foc learngain < value >'.
  4. Run several plots and determine if the problem is still present.
  5. If the problem is still present, repeat steps 3 & 4. Do not, however, decrease FOC LEARNGAIN below 0.015.
If adjusting FOC LEARNGAIN does not solve your problem, there may be other set-up issues. Remember, decreasing FOC LEARNGAIN will slow the focus learn process, so you should not attempt this unless you have observed problems using the device.
