How to check tilt on a thermal head

Product

  • Thermal 1/1.7 head
  • Thermal 2 head
  • Thermal 3 head

Symptoms

You have optimized the processing line and followed the steps in the media technical note, but you still see banding on plates or on the press sheets. You are unable to achieve sufficient image quality. The problem may be more noticeable when running high quality screens, such as Kodak Staccato screening.

Cause

The swath of the imaging head may not be perfectly aligned in the horizontal plane, which means the tilt is in need of adjustment.

Solution

Always check the head tilt when troubleshooting imaging problems or installing a new head.

  1. Image a 3-pixel horizontal bar pattern (plot 1 or plot 7).
  2. Inspect the horizontal lines using the tilt tool or a powerful loupe.
  3. If the lines do not line up, you have a problem with tilt. Refer to the sample below.
  4. To adjust the tilt, see Adjusting Tilt on a Thermal Head.
